Sedgefield ‘hammer murderer’ denied bail

A 50-year-old Sedgefield man, Sean Kelly, again appeared before the Knysna Magistrate’s Court on Wednesday for a bail application.

“He was remanded in custody pending further investigation,” said police spokesperson, Capt. Malcolm Pojie.

“His bail was denied  and the matter was postponed to 29 March 2019.”

Kelly was allegedly arrested minutes after the brutal attack on a 67-years-old woman.

Sedgefield man also faces damage to property charges

“Preliminary investigation suggest that the victim, who was later identified as Lorna Hampson, was attacked by the suspect, who was armed with a hammer at about 20:00 on Saturday, on the sidewalk in front of her house at 16 Marigold Street, Sedgefield,” Capt Pojie said.

“Members found the body of the deceased on the sidewalk, covered in blood. She had already succumbed to the extent of the injuries sustained and the blow to her head.”

He said that an autopsy is scheduled to be performed on the body to determine the possible cause of death.

“The motive for this attack is still being investigated,” Capt Pojie said.

“Meanwhile, two cases of malicious damage to property has also been added to the murder-case after the suspect allegedly assaulted and damaged the vehicles of members of the public, who were first responders to the scene.”
