You might love all the exciting hustle-and-bustle energy the city has to offer, but your skin? Not so much. Air pollutants in built-up areas can cause premature ageing and dehydrate the skin. The good news is that Nikel Cosmetics has ways to protect your skin and repair some of the damage done.

There are two common types of air pollutants found in South Africa, namely smog that occurs when emissions from combusting fossil fuels react with sunlight, the other is soot, which is made up of tiny particles of chemicals, soil, smoke, dust, or allergens in the form of gas or solids that are carried in the air.

The big city regions of Gauteng are cited as having the highest levels of air pollution and also due to it being at a much higher altitude the air can very drying to the skin. Extra care needs to be taken to ensure your skin is kept hydrated and free from air pollutants that can come into contact with your skin.

The skin is a complex organ designed to protect us from external elements, so it’s important to ensure that it isn’t compromised. “Cleansing is an important first step I recommend, as effectively cleaning your skin is crucial if you’re regularly exposed to urban pollutants,” explains Mirjana Brlecic, founder of natural skincare range Nikel Cosmetics.

Nikel Cosmetics’ Cleansing Milk with Immortelle is the perfect way to cleanse the skin. Immortelle oil, known as the “elixir of youth”, has been used since ancient times to treat skin conditions. It helps the regeneration of cells, minimising skin damage, wrinkles and scars. It also stimulates the formation of collagen, which diminishes as we age.

Keeping the skin hydrated helps it to work at its optimum and be an effective barrier against airborne pollutants. “Never take for granted the importance of drinking water – it’s vital for so many functions within the body,” says nutritional expert Andrea du Plessis. Drink at least eight glasses a day to help hydrate the skin, generate cell growth and improve circulation.

Air pollution contains microscopic contaminants that help produce free radicals in the body – unstable atoms that can damage cells, causing illness and aging. Nikel Cosmetics’ Nikelhidris moisturiser helps to combat all the ailments associated with exposure to environmental factors. It contains sunflower oil, essential fatty acids and a high concentration of vitamin E and ceramides identical to the ones found in human skin, which regenerate the damaged hydrolipid barrier of the skin and prevent moisture loss.

Diet also has an effect on your skin, and eating well can help to counteract the effects of free radicals. Coenzyme Q10, an essential skin-repair building block, can be found in fish and seafoods, nuts and seeds. “Vitamin E, which is found in avocado and wholegrain cereals, is another way to help fight against damage from free radicals,” adds Du Plessis.

The all-new Honda Amaze, released in South Africa this month, is set to define a new standard for compact sedans.

Designed specifically as a sedan from the ground up, the new Amaze is larger in every dimension, and features a bold, head-turning design that’s unmistakably Honda. Inside, the sophisticated cabin is both stylish and exceptionally roomy.

Honda’s renowned i-VTEC engine technology ensures that the new Amaze also gets the go to match the show, while delivering exceptional fuel efficiency. An extended wheelbase and fine-tuned suspension ensure confident road manners and a refined ride.

Two equipment levels – Trend and Comfort – provide Amaze buyers with a choice of features, although both executions offer a high level of standard equipment. Safety remains a priority, with all models featuring a comprehensive array of active and standard safety features.

In addition to highly competitive pricing, the exceptional efficiency of the new Amaze contributes to economical running costs – an increasingly vital aspect of car ownership. Further peace of mind is provided by a two-year/30 000 km service plan.

“We believe that the new Honda Amaze will set a new, elevated standard for small sedans in South Africa,” says Toshiaki Kusakari, Head of Automobiles at Honda Motor Southern Africa.

“We’re expecting the car to appeal to a broad and varied motoring audience, ranging from young singles and start-up families to mature motorists. All will be attracted by the Amaze’s value-added purchase price, excellent fuel efficiency and low operating cost.

“In addition, the new Amaze is exceptionally roomy and offers a generous luggage compartment, while Honda’s revered reputation for reliability and good resale value will also add to the Amaze’s attraction,” Mr Kusakari concluded.

EXTERIOR DESIGN

A completely new design, the second-generation Honda Amaze was conceptualised as a sedan from the very beginning.

This allowed the design team to create a cohesive, streamlined shape with a flowing silhouette and a strong, individual character, while also expressing the current Honda design language.

The new Amaze is only 5 mm longer and 15 mm wider than its predecessor, but the wheelbase has grown by a substantial 65 mm, which translates into shorter overhangs and more interior space.

The front is dominated by Honda’s characteristic ‘solid wing’ appearance, which manifests itself in a broad bar extending across the width of the contrasting black honeycomb grille. It also provides a visual link to the bold halogen headlight clusters.

A lower air intake is framed by recessed, black-framed fog lamps in the case of Comfort models. A slim, colour-coded splitter below the air intake adds a sporty finishing touch.

Viewed from the side, the alloy wheels – standard across the range – are a visual highlight, while also reducing unsprung mass. A crisp shoulder line running from the headlights to the taillight clusters highlights the Amaze’s sculpted flanks while a broad sill contributes to the sedan’s planted, powerful look.

The smoothly curved roofline flows into a neatly integrated, raised rear deck, which is accentuated by the notched C-pillar.

The rear view is dominated by the C-shaped taillight clusters, which frame a bootlid that opens wide and deep. An integrated spoiler on the bootlid’s leading edge adds a sporty touch, while the colour-coded, integrated bumper extends into a stylised rear diffuser.

On Comfort models, comprehensive colour coding contributes to a pervasive sense of visual harmony.

INTERIOR EXECUTION

There’s nothing entry-level about the interior of the new Amaze: it’s not only thoroughly modern, but also exceptionally spacious and comprehensively equipped across the range.

Smart cloth upholstery is used to trim the contoured, supportive front seats and rear bench seat. Genuine Honda synthetic leather seat covers can be ordered as a no-cost option.

Gloss piano black detailing on the dashboard adds to the sophisticated ambience, while the ergonomically designed dashboard features a driver-centric instrument binnacle with analogue dials for speed and rev count. The binnacle also houses a digital trip computer.

The centre stack is home to a sound system offering FM/AM radio functionality, as well as MP3 music file playback and Bluetooth, which allows hands-free telephony and music streaming. The four-speaker system also provides USB connectivity and an AUX socket.

A multifunction steering wheel allows safe and convenient control of the audio system, as well as making Bluetooth-linked hands-free cellphone calls. Generous cabin storage includes pockets in all four doors and cupholders in the centre console, while a fold-down rear seat armrest also incorporates cup holders for rear occupants.

Because of the new Amaze’s comparatively long 2 470 mm wheelbase, the interior is airy and spacious, with ample leg and headroom both front and rear. The boot capacity is a best-in-class 420 litres – 20 litres more than the original Brio Amaze.

DRIVETRAIN AND DYNAMICS

The new Honda Amaze is powered by an advanced and reliable four-cylinder engine. The 1 199 cc unit employs Honda’s i-VTEC intelligent valve timing management system, ensuring optimum performance and fuel efficiency.

Maximum power output is rated at 66 kW, reached at 6 000 r/min, combined with a torque peak of 110 Nm at 4 800 r/min. In the baseline Amaze Trend model, a five-speed manual gearbox is standard, while buyers of the Comfort model can also opt for a new-generation Constantly Variable Transmission (CVT).

With a kerb mass of just more than 900 kg, the Amaze is able to deliver swift performance, and frugal fuel economy. Manual-gearbox models will accelerate from 0-100 km/h in 12,3 sec, while the CVT version requires a still brisk 13,5 sec. Top speed is 160 km/h for all derivatives.

The manual-transmission Amaze models achieve a combined cycle fuel consumption figure of 5,6 litres/100 km, while the CVT version is only slightly thirstier at 5,7 litres/100 km.

The Amaze’s all-new platform features an independent, McPherson strut-based front suspension, and a torsion beam rear set-up. It’s been designed to offer confident handling and a refined ride, while the electrically assisted power steering ensures effortless, crisp steering response.

Overall refinement and NVH has been improved substantially, thanks to the new platform’s enhanced sound  proofing and reduced engine noise transmission, as well as optimised engine mounts.

SAFETY

As one would expect of a Honda, the new Amaze sedan doesn’t skimp on safety features. The all-new platform makes extensive use of high-tensile steel, ensuring a lightweight but extremely rigid construction.

It also features Honda’s Advanced Compatibility structure, which allows for specific, programmed deformation of body structures in the case of a collision, while ensuring the integrity of the passenger safety cell.

All Honda Amaze models are fitted with dual front airbags, inertia reel seatbelts front and rear, and IsoFix child seat anchors. On the active safety front, ABS brakes with electronic brake force distribution (EBD) are standard.

RANGE AND FEATURES

As already indicated, the new Honda Amaze range consists of three models, all employing the same engine, but offering a choice between two transmissions, and two trim levels.

The most affordable Amaze is the 1.2 Trend, available as a manual gearbox model only. However, even this so-called base model offers buyers an extensive list of standard equipment.

Exterior features include 15-inch alloy wheels shod with 175/65 R15 tyres, a roof-mounted sharkfin antenna, and a high-mounted third brake light.

Inside, smart cloth upholstery is standard, as is the tilt-adjustable multifunction steering wheel. The four-speaker audio system features FM/AM and MP3 functionality.

It also includes Bluetooth connectivity for audio streaming and hands-free telephony. Central locking is standard, while the exterior mirrors are adjusted manually.

Moving up to the 1.2 Comfort, the exterior gains colour-coding for the exterior mirrors and door handles, while low-mounted, recessed fog lamps are standard, too.

Inside, the Comfort includes everything that’s standard on Trend versions, but adds automatic air-conditioning and electric adjustment of the exterior mirrors, as well as automatic door locking once the vehicle starts moving.

The 1.2 Comfort CVT is identical in all respects to its manual-gearbox stablemate, but gains gearshift paddles behind the steering wheel to allow for manual shifts between the CVT’s virtual gears.

All three Honda Amaze models are available in a choice of four new colours: White Orchid Pearl, Lunar Silver Metallic, Modern Steel Metallic, and Radiant Red Metallic.

PRICING, WARRANTY AND SERVICE PLAN

The new Honda Amaze recommended retail pricing is as follows:

Honda Amaze 1.2 Trend:               R179 900

Honda Amaze 1.2 Comfort:           R193 900

Honda Amaze 1.2 Comfort CVT: R208 900

The range is supported by a full five-year/200 000 km warranty, as well as a two-year/30 000 km service plan, and a three-year AA Roadside Assistance package. Scheduled services are at 15 000 km intervals.

One of South Africa’s popular A-segment SUVs – the Mahindra KUV100 NXT – is set to become even more popular, thanks to additional new features and styling upgrades on the 2018 model.

“The New KUV 100 NXT offers an excellent value proposition of space along with safety features such as airbags and ABS from the base variant onwards. At R134 999, coupled with an attractive finance and insurance offer, this variant is expected to generate significant interest amongst the first-time buyers,” says Rajesh Gupta, CEO of Mahindra South Africa.

New look, bolder stance

The New KUV100 NXT enters the market with a bold new look, which includes a new grille, larger alloy wheels on the K8 variant and redesigned tail lamps.

The redesigned seven-slot grille appears to be more aggressive, and the number plate now sits atop a blacked-out bumper section; there is also a new silver skid plate to emphasise the KUV’s SUV-family genes. Mahindra has also created new blacked-out surrounds for the integrated fog lights, which are standard on the K8 variant.

On the flanks, the new 15″ diamond-cut dual-tone alloy wheels on the K8 sit in flared wheel arches that now feature redesigned cladding. On the roof, the integrated roof rails have been redesigned to be more aerodynamically efficient.

Some of the most popular styling cues on The New KUV100 NXT, the fist-shaped side mirrors and the rear door handles in the C-pillars, have been retained, although the mirrors now incorporate the side turn signals.

At the rear, the tail gate and rear bumper have been completely redesigned. The rear tail gate features deeper character lines that form around brand-new double-barrel rear combination lights and a new electronic latch on certain models. The headlights are now equipped with LED daytime running lights.

The restyled rear bumper mirrors the trapezoidal design of the front bumper, with new integrated reflectors and a silver skid plate.

Rounding off the rear design is a new tail-gate spoiler which was aerodynamically tested.

More premium interior, more specifications

The New KUV100 NXT upgrade continues inside the new model, where Mahindra has added new premium finishes to the higher-specification models. This includes new fabric upholstery, piano black detailing on certain specification levels and a new temperature control panel on models fitted with climate control.

The New KUV100 NXT now also has a 7″ (17.8 cm) touch screen on the K8 variant, which replaces the previous 3.5″ display. This infotainment system is equipped with Bluetooth connectivity, a USB port and audio, image and video playback.

Other luxury additions include a new remote boot-opening switch, a new gearshift indicator display, Intellipark reverse parking sensors and electrically foldable side mirrors on the K8.

The additional luxury specifications on The New KUV100 NXT only add to its already impressive list of features such as power windows, tilt-adjustable power steering, air conditioning, central locking rear underfloor storage bins and foldable rear seats.

On K6 and K8 models, this list of creature comforts grows to include a rear row armrest, a cooled glove box, follow-me-home and lead-me-to-vehicle headlights, remote keyless entry, speed-sensing door locks and front and rear 12V power outlets.

High safety and security standards across the range

In keeping with Mahindra’s family-friendly nature, all variants of the KUV are equipped with dual front airbags, child safety locks on the rear doors, ABS with EBD (EBD available only on K6+ and K8 variants) and corner braking control (CBC).

In addition, the K6+ and K8 versions of The New KUV100 NXT also have speed-sensing automatic door locks, automatic hazard warnings in emergency situations and a security alarm.

Petrol and turbodiesel power

The KUV100 NXT is available with the choice of two three-cylinderall-aluminium engines.

The 1.2 mFalcon G80 petrol engine is equipped with multi-point fuel injection and dual-variable valve timing to deliver 61 kW and 115 Nm of torque. The 1.2 mFalcon D75 turbodiesel engine has common rail direct injection and an intercooler to deliver 57 kW and a generous 190 Nm of torque, with the latter peaking between 1 750 rpm and 2 250 rpm.

On the K8 specification level, the diesel model is equipped with a micro-hybrid system that switches off the engine when the vehicle is not moving and immediately restarts the engine when the accelerator is pressed.

Both engines drive the front wheels of the KUV100 through a five-speed manual gearbox.

SUV-underpinnings refined further

A large part of The New KUV100 NXT’s popularity is its SUV-style and functionality. This includes its higher-than-normal 170 mm ground clearance and its equally functional approach and departure angles of just under 22 degrees.

Under the sheet metal, the KUV rides on independent McPherson struts suspension with dual path mounts and coil springs. At the rear, the suspension consists of semi-independent twist beams and coil springs, with all four corners also equipped with hydraulic gas-charged shock absorbers.

The New KUV100 NXT has a wheelbase of 2.385 metres that has been intelligently utilised to offer seating for five adults and 243 litres of luggage space, which can be increased to 473 litres, with the rear seats folded flat.

True value for money

With six models in The New KUV100 NXT range, there is bound to be a Mahindra for every taste and budget. The range is as follows:

KUV NXT K2+ Petrol:                                             R134 999 (incl. VAT)

KUV NXT K4+ Petrol:                                             R163 999 (Incl. VAT)

KUV NXT K6+ Petrol:                                             R187 999 (incl. VAT)

KUV NXT K6+ Diesel:                                             R204 999 (incl. VAT)

KUV NXT K8 Petrol:                                               R199 999 (incl. VAT)

KUV NXT K8 Diesel:                                                R219 999 (incl. VAT)

All models feature a full 3-year / 100 000 km standard warranty plus a 2-year / 50 000 km powertrain warranty. All K6+ and K8+ models also have a 3-year / 50 000 km service plan as standard.  Service intervals for both the petrol and diesel models are 10 000 km and all vehicles have a 3-year roadside assistance plan.

The all-new Jeep® Wrangler – the most capable Wrangler ever – has been put to the test in a way that truly commemorates its legendary status in off-road circles.

To celebrate the introduction of the all-new fourth generation, the iconic Jeep Wrangler was taken to the test on the challenging Rubicon Trail in the mountains between California and Nevada, USA. At the end of August, a convoy of Wrangler vehicles, all in the off-road specialist Rubicon trim, the most capable for off-road driving, set off on the legendary track located west of Lake Tahoe.

The unstoppable Rubicon was perfectly at ease on the extremely hard trail, which winds up rocks, slopes and plateaus, climbing over natural obstacles, courtesy of its unmatched off-road equipment. Each model was equipped with the Rock-Trac 4×4 system, featuring a two-speed transfer case with 4.0:1 low-range gear ratio, front and rear heavy-duty next-generation Dana 44 axles, Tru-Lok electric front- and rear-axle lockers to tackle the most extreme off-road sections and electronic sway-bar disconnect which allows drivers to disconnect the front sway bar to deliver additional wheel travel for traversing the toughest trails.

Powered by the new 2.0-litre petrol turbo and the powerful 3.6-litre petrol engine, the Rubicon models engaged in this unique adventure exploited their ground clearance of over 25 centimetres and leading  angles, including a 36.4-degree approach angle, a 25.8-degree breakover angle and a 30.8-degree departure angle. In addition, they benefitted from a maximum crawl ratio of 77.2:1 (on petrol versions) and up to 76 cm of water fording.

Rubicon Trail, one of the most challenging off-road tracks in the world

The Rubicon Trail is one of the world’s most challenging trails  – rated a 10 for “most difficult” on a scale of 1 to 10 – and is known as the “granddaddy of all off-highway trails.” In 2003 the trail inspired the name of the Rubicon trim, the most capable off-road vehicle in the Wrangler range.

For these characteristics, the history of the Jeep brand is linked in a special way to this track, arguably one of the most famous off-road trails in the world.

It was in 1953, when a group of approximately 150 friends took their Jeep vehicles across the rough granite path through the Sierra Nevada Mountains on their way to Lake Tahoe.

The trek, originally conceived as a way to support the economy of the local community, was to become the first official Jeep crossing of the Rubicon Trail precisely at that moment when Jeep vehicles were making the shift from being working vehicles to becoming partners for personal adventures of discovery. It was the first-ever “Jeep Jamboree”, the most classic of all American meetings, created to savour the excitement that everyone feels when joining the big Jeep family.

The Rubicon Trail is a 35-kilometre route, part road and part 4×4 trail. The maintained portion of the route is called the McKinney-Rubicon Springs Road and begins in Georgetown, California, a hamlet in the state’s Gold Country. Operating from 1890 to 1920, the McKinney-Rubicon Springs Road was originally established for stagecoaches to access resort hotels at Wentworth Springs and Rubicon Springs. The trailhead for the unmaintained portion of the route (which is about 19 kilometres long) begins in a location adjacent to Loon Lake and passes in part through the El Dorado National Forest. Rambling over large boulders, rocky terrain and enormous granite slabs with steep inclines and sharp drops,  the trail ends in South Lake Tahoe. The trail crosses a river at one point close to Lake Tahoe. Early settlers named the river “Rubicon” after its counterpart in Italy – a small river north of Rome that Julius Caesar fatefully crossed in 49 BC.

Drawing upon that history, the term “Rubicon” now means “a limit that, when passed or exceeded, permits no return and typically results in irrevocable commitment.”

Since 1950, the Rubicon Trail has been used by off-road enthusiasts as the ideal location for exciting off-highway adventured in Jeep vehicles. Furthermore, for over four decades, the Rubicon Trail has also been used by Jeep engineering teams to improve the off-road capability of Jeep SUVs and to aid in the development of new models and technologies. Using trails like the Rubicon has led to developing important innovations, such as Rock-Trac® 4:1 transfer case, Quadra-Drive II®, Tru-Lok® locking axle differentials, disconnecting front sway bar, underbody skid-plate protection, front Dana 44 axle, multi-link suspension, BLD (Brake Lock Differential on the new Wrangler generation) and steel front and rear bumpers on the Rubicon trim level.

New Jeep Wrangler

Introduced in September across main European markets, the new Jeep Wrangler – the fourth generation of most capable off-road vehicle – perfectly embodies the “Go Anywhere, Do Anything”  claim of the Jeep brand. The new Wrangler is reasserting its position as an undisputed off-road champion while showing it is just as at ease on everyday city streets, with its excellent comfort and state-of-the-art technology. The end result is the most capable off-road Wrangler ever, thanks to its two advanced four-wheel drive systems (Command-Trac and Rock-Trac), Tru-Lock electric front- and rear-axle lockers, Trac-Lok limited-slip differential and electronic front sway-bar disconnect. The engine range of the new Wrangler has been renewed with the introduction of a 2.2-litre turbo diesel and a 2.0-litre petrol engine. Both new engines are paired with the eight-speed automatic transmission, a first for Wrangler.

If you’re anything like us, you’ll be excited to read the headline ‘Summer is coming’, and nothing better introduces the change of season in Cape Town quite like movies under the stars with The Galileo Open Air Cinema.

The recipe is beautifully simple; great movies to suit all tastes, a festive food market of local gourmet goodness and the option to pack your own picnic to enjoy ‘al fresco’. What could be better than the chance of spending time in the beautiful outdoors, under a ceiling of stars, falling in love all over again with your favourite flicks and the sheer beauty of the Mother City.

What to expect

Take your pick from various regular venues, from Kirstenbosch Gardens to Central Park in Century City, as well as brand new partner venues at Glenellen Farm, Kenilworth Racecourse, Rustenburg Girls’ High School, Willowbridge Mall and a sensational new spot at the V&A Waterfront’s ‘Battery Park’. Your favourite summer staple is now also coming to you every Saturday at a different wine estate across the gorgeous Cape Winelands, which leaves zero excuse to stay home on the weekends.

Kick-starting on October 17th, The Galileo’s seventh season of movie magic will also combine another year’s worth of giving back through their various CSI efforts, as they team up with various charities across the province for some serious summer happiness.

Movies start when the light fades and if it’s not quite warm enough for you yet, grab one of their blankets and back rests and cuddle up close. I can just barely see their little faces, hidden behind wooden boards, rocks, or whatever they can find.  The laser tag game has begun and one can feel the heightened excitement, even from the sidelines.

My 9-year-old and all his buds are ready for the signal, their camo-painted faces and gear barely a blur as the buzzer goes off.  There are two teams and I can see they are going to be super competitive.

When we found the S.W.A.T Laser Tag gang, we knew that this would be the perfect boys birthday party gig.  The guys have been chatting about it the entire week and finally, the day has arrived.  And, the best part of this, is that it’s very affordable and perfectly safe.  No splattering of paintballs, which may take a week to remove.  No shouts of pain and no waiting around while your friends keep playing after you have been eliminated.

The rules are simple and effective for Laser Tag

  1. Divide the participants into two teams.
  2. Arm yourself with a laser tag gun.
  3. Aim and go!

The laser tag guns are deadly accurate and the range is amazing (I know – I tried it!).  You are given unlimited ammunition and lives so that you don’t need to miss out on a thing.  Be prepared for a sweaty bunch of kids after their full 2 hours of war play.

S.W.A.T. Laser Tag has 4 branches, Cape Town, Bloemfontein, Durban and Gauteng.  For this mad bunch, we stayed local just around Melkbos at the 4×4 Arena off the R27, but you can also head over to Helderberg Farm in Stellenbosch, or opt for the mobile option, where they come out to you.

Corporate Options

While this was a laser tag birthday party for 9 and 10-year-olds, I noticed that S.W.A.T also offers corporate team building packages.  This sounded like a fab idea and I can just imagine grown men and women screaming around, all out to outwit the next guy, much like they have to do in real life.  Communication, planning and basic teamwork are definitely required, I realise, as I watch the little guys chatting and scheming out there in the heat.  Again, the S.W.A.T. Laser Tag team can come out to you or the employees can choose one of their many venues.  The entire day can be hosted by S.W.A.T. and the laser tag game can just be one portion of the team building day.

A break from screen time!

The boys run over, during a much-needed break, to grab some water, all talking at once, planning their next moves.  I smile, knowing that this outdoor play is just what they needed.  In this day and age of too much screen time, getting outside, running and having harmless competitive fun, is a godsend.

Already, the boys are speaking about who will have their next birthday party at S.W.A.T. Laser Tag.  And, what they will do over the next school holidays.

“We’re off!”  My 9-year-old shouts and they all run to find a new hiding space.  The fun continues!
