The George Municipality and Oppie Bol Foundation celebrated its successful charity golf day with disabled and able-bodied golfers at Kingswood Golf Course with a fancy gala dinner and prizegiving ceremony.
Sixty enthusiastic golfers participated in the first ever George Disability Awareness Charity Golf Day yesterday (11 January 2019).
Disabled and able-bodied golfers from around the country and overseas played together at Kingswood Golf Course. A family from Germany supported the event.
The gala evening started off with speakers from George Municipality and Oppie Bol Foundation, a three course meal, games to win prizes, prizes for the winners of the day as well as prizes being auctioned off.
Organised in collaboration with disability non-profit organisation Oppie Bol Foundation, the golf day and other disability sport development projects are part of the municipality’s Accessibility to Sport programme.
The programme aims to make sport facilities in George accessible to those living with disabilities and implementing sporting codes that enhance the quality of life for persons living with disabilities.
Granville Campher, Manager: Sport Development at George Municipality, said as a section of the Municipality their aim is to develop sports for disabled people just like they develop sports for able-bodied persons.
He said they do not want one or two events a year for disabled sportspeople but “we want sports for disabled persons to become as mainstream as sports for abled bodied persons are.”
Campher thanked the people for taking part in the event and helping change the world for disabled people.
Funds raised by the golf day will be used to cover the expenses of the day and pay for green fees of disabled golfers from previously disadvantaged communities in the George municipal area.
George Municipality and Oppie Bol Foundation thanked sponsors of the day, De Dekke Spar, Halfway Toyota, Just Water, LVDS, ComUnity Solutions and Benber Civils. Rudie Lombard, a member of the Association of the Mouth and Foot Painters and Association, also donated some of his paintings to be auctioned off.
