MEC opens netball court at Outeniqua Park

Western Cape MEC for Cultural Affairs and Sport, Anroux Marais, officially opened a new netball court at Outeniqua Park on Saturday.

She also thanked George Municipality and the Eden Sport Council for all their efforts in promoting sports as well as the teams that take part in sports.

“Our women in sport are too few,” she added, and asked women to take part in netball and live healthier lives.

The MEC said that Cape Town is bidding for the 2013 World Netball Championships.

“It is only us and New Zealand that is bidding. New Zealand is good but I am not going to be put off by that. I pray and believe we will get is, there is power in prayer,” she described.

MEC Marais also asked the clubs to look after the courts.

“The courts give you as players an opportunity to have a healthy lifestyle. I want to see that these courts deliver top athletes,” she said.

Meanwhile, Cllr Sean Snyman, Portfolio Councillor for Sport in the George Municipality, said the Council wants to get especially the youth involved in sports as it is a unifying factor.

“It is one of the ways young people can learn how to tolerate other people. You learn discipline in sports. We learn to keep our individuality and learn how to be team players. Netball is one of those sports where you can learn to be better as a team.”

Desmond Speelman, Chairperson of the Eden Sport Council, also thanked the government for doing so much for the Garden Route District.

He asked the clubs to also take responsibility for the facilities and look after it. He thanked the George Municipality for all the developments for sports.
