]]>Alimandi, situated off the Klapmuts turnoff in Paarl, is a family-owned and run business. Brothers, Pieterjan (PJ) and Oeloff du Plessis, together with Maresa Samuel, bring over 12 years of experience within the landscaping and nursery industry. They believe in a sustainable lifestyle and want to impart that element into every client’s life as best they can. Their passion can clearly be seen in the quality of their plants and the way in which they work with their customers.
Alimandi specialises in Indigenous, Local and Water-Wise Plants, Plant and Tree Sourcing, Project Management, Consulting, Landscape Management and Design, and now open to the public with their Succulent Trading Post at Klein Joostenberg, Stellenbosch, as well as an Online Shop.
For many years, Alimandi only catered to wholesalers and retailers, but when they realised there was a need from the public for quality succulents and other water-wise plants, they explored how they could expand their offering.
After much chatting, whiskeys and ‘kuiers’ with the owners of Klein Joostenberg, they agreed that Alimandi could carve out a space on their property for their Succulent Trading Post. Within a few weeks, they were ready to trade and opened to the public. Right now, even in our lockdown, Alimandi is able to trade and supply plant and garden lovers with their amazing quality-grown succulents and other water-wise plants through their public and retail nursery.
And, if you can’t get down to Klein Joostenberg, they have just launched their Online Shop, where you simply choose the succulents you want, pop them into your check-out basket, pay and they will deliver.
With lockdown affecting everyone, and not only businesses but also our fragile emotional state, Alimandi have started the initiative #dontbekaksharethelekker. Along with a client, they are encouraging all South Africans and even further beyond our borders, to reach out to a friend, family member, customer, or anyone you feel simply needs a willing ear.
Sometimes, that is all it takes – just a chat and a laugh – knowing that we will all get through this and this too will be a distant memory soon.
To connect with Alimandi, find out more about what they offer through their nursery and support their #dontbekaksharethelekker, head on over to their website or Facebook page.

]]>The post Leaving a Legacy one Domestic Worker at a time appeared first on RNEWS.
]]>Born in South West Africa in 1940, Maggie learnt the hard way how cruel the world could be. Witnessing her father’s execution at the age of 7 years old, and then moving to Cape Town at the tender age of 9 to be a domestic worker was just the beginning. She raised a family’s 10-month-old baby and eventually ran the home, which meant Maggie had to grow up fast. It was during this time she became acutely aware of the inequality experienced by non-white women and men. Especially those who worked as housekeepers, butlers, caregivers, caretakers and gardeners. She realised that domestic workers needed support, and so she founded the Domestic Worker’s Association (DWA) back in 1974. She put insurance cover in place and assisting with training to empower these workers. With the support of the greater community, including people like Helen Suzman, who was the first to sign up her gardener, the organisation pioneered to fight for these worker’s human rights. The arrival of politically affiliated labour organisations introduced a political influence on labour matters. This mix that did not fit her aspiration of impartial representation of labourers’ rights. Maggie then redirected her focus towards the members’ need for childcare services closer to their place of work. – and went on to opening Pinocchio Creche in Green Point. They currently cater to over 70 children, majorly still servicing children of domestic workers and general household labourers. Many of these workers feel the stress and worry of leaving their children, often alone, commuting from various townships and urban areas around Cape Town. Pinocchio Creche brought them peace of mind, knowing their babies were being looked after and receiving an education to boot.
The creche has been running since 1984 and has grown from strength to strength, starting off with only 40 kids and now bridging on almost 80. The programme has a holistic approach to children’s development – besides cognitive, social-emotional, and fine and gross motor skills development, they offer violin music, organic garden, and even tennis development programmes to all attendees. They have a non-exclusion policy. In 2001 the organisation was re-launched as the Domestic Workers Association Educational Trust, under which Pinocchio Creche is a project branch.
Helen, Maggie’s daughter, was one of the first to enrol in the creche. “I grew up within this nurturing environment that greatly contributed to the fundamental growth of each child at the crèche; and today I admire the efforts of those parents who prioritise the welfare of their children, despite financial limitations,” says Helen.
Amongst Helen’s impressive achievements is receiving the Lion Derek Livesey Memorial Award for her community work at the age of 14 years. She was also nominated for the 2007 Reebok Human Rights Award by the University Of Toronto Faculty Of Law. She was further awarded three provincial awards by the Department of Social Development. To add to this, Helen was also awarded three Certificates of Appreciation from the Western Cape Department of Social Development. This for recognition of valuable contributions made to the Atlantic Seaboard and Cape Town Early Childhood Development Principals Forum in assuming the roles of Chairperson and Secretary. An award was also given in participation of the ECD Program Development Registration Workshops. Helen credits her early years at Pinocchio Creche for these awards and accolades.
A few more accolades, which Maggie was primarily instrumental in, was the influence she had on multi-racial multi-cultural Model C schools in South Africa. After years of campaigning, in 1991, Maggie finally managed to convince the Department of Education to open Model C schools to all races. Helen was one of the first non-white pupils to attend Ellerton Primary School in Sea Point and the event was covered both internationally and locally across all media.
More recently, in 2010, Pinocchio Creche launched a Cape Town International Service Learning partnership with Howard University School of Social Work in Washington DC. Over 300 members of faculty, Masters and Doctoral students have passed through their doors to learn and experience their social work within the early childhood sector. All this with limited resources.
Through the DWA Educational Trust’s fundraising efforts, a five-year plan was developed which involves a very focused growth model –
The goals are huge but the will and passion are real!
In the words of the now-retired Maggie, “We can create a better future. In fact, we have it in our hands. Our children are our future.”
Whether you are simply a caring citizen or a corporate who employs low-income workers, you too can be part of the cause and movement.
How?
Simply, reach out today and enquire on how you too can make a difference.

]]>As a business, who saw the gap in the market place, where women with cup sizes C and up were not being supported properly (in every essence of the word!), they decided to help them support their boobs.
The Thursdays range of lingerie is not only beautifully made but super comfortable and supportive for women blessed with a buxom bosom. Did you know that there are over 1,5 million women in South Africa who wear a C cup and up and most are not wearing the right bras.
Shona Macdonald, the founder and owner, who you may recognise as one of the Survivor SA: Champions contestants a few years back, has shown that she is no ditsy blonde. She is a successful businesswomen, who even managed to impress the Shark Tank investors with her Thursdays Lingerie and Swimwear business concept.
On the 6th of December this year, Thursdays Lingerie and Swimwear launched their new Fynbos Lingerie range. Their proudly South African production is like fynbos, blossoming in the Cape after the “fire” which has seen the dramatic increase in Chinese imports. The abundance of cheap imports has led to the loss of nearly two thirds of the clothing sectors jobs over the past two decades. Thursdays has been working hard to find and upskill the right team, to make quality lingerie that is unique to the Cape.
The evening started out with a bang at Grand Daddy Boutique Hotel in Cape Town, where the hand-picked VIP guests were treated to all brands of yummy gin mixes, complements of Chroma Gin, African Handcrafted Gin and Waverly Hill Wines, vibey tunes and an amazing runway fashion show. Boudoir Box helped the ladies out in measuring them up, ensuring they were wearing the correctly sized bras. And, just to add to the spoiling, DYME Beauty App offered complementary pamper sessions for all!
The Thursdays models were simply stunning, strutting their stuff, most for the first time on stage, in the black and white fynbos lingerie – such confidence – such beauty!
The evening was a testament to the power of collaboration, supported by many other female entrepreneurs. Special thanks goes out to My People’s Office for the event co-ordination, Sigrid Kenmuir for pre-event copy editing, Lisa Bell of The Word Architect for her journalistic submission, Hot Coffee Media for event photography, TMS Make Up and Hair for dolling up the models, and to the prize sponsors LynnD Boudoir, Creative Angels Fashion Benefit and Chroma Gin for spoiling the guests.
Thursdays is growing year in and year out and we are excited to see what else they will come up with. Going back to their routes, Thursdays has their Urban Zebra Collection which is a range of stylish black and white swimwear. You can choose from beautifully designed and comfortably-fitting full costumes or go daring with their two pieces bikinis. Their Urban Zebra swimwear range does cater for all sizes and you can purchase their two pieces separately as they know not all ladies fit into one size range.
And if you fancy their Fynbos Lingerie range, take a look at these – you will feel like a queen, we guarantee!
If you’re keen to pimp your lingerie or swimwear wardrobe, simply hop onto their online shop and order away! Their prices are reasonable and you get free delivery for orders over R1000.
Thursdays was created in support of those big breasted women who struggle to find perfectly fitting underwear. If you support boobs as Thursdays does, then you have to take a look at their eclectic collection. Not only do they have tasteful and beautiful lingerie, they do swimwear too.

]]>The post The 20th International Jazz Festival – interview with Craig Lucas appeared first on RNEWS.
]]>We were privileged enough to get an exclusive interview with Craig Lucas, the up and coming young SA star. The Elsies River boy has come a long way since his The Voice SA 2017 win and with one album, Restless, under his belt and a string of singles doing phenomenally well, we are looking forward to what more he can bring to the locals. His “Heart’s Exposed” song is a dedication to his coming out and the video even features him romantically connected with his current partner. Quite controversial but it’s not the first time a newby singer has come out openly – Will Young, UK Idols winner comes to mind.
Craig had this to say about winning The Voice SA and the years that have followed, “Everything has been so new, of course, and so I still get goosebumps thinking about the win and all that has happened since then.” We got a little deeper and asked Craig what he would tell the 12-year-old Craig if he could go back in time. With a heavy sigh, and hand swipe across his face, Craig said he can hardly remember that boy, but he does remember that he didn’t seem to ever be 100% happy. “12-year-old Craig was constantly trying to find happiness through achievement, excelling in academics but failing socially.” He would tell that boy that it really isn’t that bad and to just look to be happy with the simple things in life.
We spoke about other famous singers, such as Luther Vandross, who once stated that his ultimate venue to sing at would be the Royal Albert Hall in London, which he eventually achieved, loving both the intimacy and expanse of the iconic building. On asking Craig where he would like to perform, he gave a little laugh and admitted that he hadn’t given that much thought as he was still so overwhelmed with the local performances. He said he wasn’t quite sure yet whether he preferred big stage and big audience shows or the more close and personal gigs. Well, Craig, we will definitely ask you that question in a year or so and look forward to your answer.
As for the Jazz Festival, besides a kick-ass line-up, the event was a resounding success, bringing in jazzy fans from all around the world. Friday saw Curiosity Killed the Cat, a long-standing UK band who began in the ’80s, giving us some sweet tunes, oldies and covers both. Knower, an American electronic duo, who played jazz-funk, had the crowd stomping and jiving for a good hour. What followed, on the same stage, was Shekhinah, the Durbanite, who made her mark in the 2011 SA Idols and again in 2012, oddly not winning, but clearly winning wasn’t necessary. She has climbed to international fame with her distinctive sound and voice, and we know we haven’t seen the last of her.
Saturday’s jazz festival artists featured a real icon, Jonathan Butler, who got the crowd going with many classics. The Gypsy Kings created quite a stir getting us to swing our hips and raise our hands up. Local artists like The Lady Day Big Band were a real hit and Reza Khota Quartet warmed our hearts with their soulful sounds.
There were 5 stages to choose from and amazingly you couldn’t hear the music from one stage to the next. Craig Lucas ended the night off the jazz festival on the Bassline stage and one could see that no one wanted to go home.
We are always proud to report on local talent and even more so on local events. We hope that if you were there, you had a ball and that we will see you next year for another star-studded and jam-packed line-up.
A warm thank you to Craig Lucas for the intimate interview and wish him well this year!

]]>However, the team of Cape Renovations are an exception.
Owned and project managed by Esrar Mongie, you can expect a high level of professionalism and quality workmanship when investing in Cape Renovations services.
Over his 20 odd years in the building industry, Esrar has touched on all areas of construction and renovation. From offices to homes, he can proudly and confidently say that he knows the ins and outs of the building industry well.
In 2001, Esrar started off his construction career with a small German-owned Project Management company. And, then in 2004, began with Murray and Roberts. From there over the course of the next 12 years, Esrar worked on various sites and projects, either as a Supervisor or Manager. This period taught him all he needed to know and it was around 2016 when Esrar saw a gap in the market place.
“I realised that there were very few reliable and honest renovation companies in Cape Town. The good ones that existed had market share but they often were charging exorbitant prices and slowly were giving the industry a bad name. I did my research and decided to take the plunge of opening up my own renovations business. Cape Renovations was born in 2016 and I have not looked back since.”
Over the past 2 years, Esrar has ensured that he manages each project personally, no matter the size. He says that he has efficient and reliable staff, but knows that what the public wants is that personal touch.
“I start off with a site visit and a long conversation with the owner of the property. This way I can establish just what is required, what their goal is and whether we are able to fulfil their needs.”
Following this visit, Esrar crafts a detailed cost control and budget breakdown. At Cape Renovations, they pride themselves on sticking to the plan, budget and timeframe which they layout from the onset. Esrar believes this is why they have been a great success over the past 2 years. That and their exceptional focus on detail, always ensuring that the work is completed to the customer’s satisfaction.
“I have always had a knack for being able to conceptualise and foresee a project. I work with the end in mind and believe that every great creation starts with a forward-thinking plan.”
Whether you are looking for a minor renovation or a complete overhaul, Cape Renovations has the expertise, manpower and ability to assist you.

unite
/juːˈnʌɪt/
verb
come or bring together for a common purpose or action.
“they called on the world to unite”
And, when given the opportunity to be involved in this amazing love affair with animals and give back, we jumped at the chance.
Giving is Living is an initiative striving to protect and help those little beasties that cannot help themselves. Backed by the Equestrian Tack business, Savara, which started back in 2013, the love for animals, in general, was quite clear when they liaised with their clientele. The stories of horse and dog rescues came flooding in and it was clear there was a need.
Savara started setting up small volunteer events with clients. They visited various charities and helped out where they could, donating old tack so that these charities could raise funds for the abandoned horses and dogs.
This year will be Savara’s first Giving is Living major event, their Pieces for Paws Charity Art Auction. 3 organisations were chosen, Mdzananda Animal Clinic, Wolwerivier Outreach Work and SANCCOB. Savara started reaching out to local artists to donate, and before they knew it, they had received over 70 pieces of art (sculptures and paintings).
Further, to their surprise, they received donations from world-renowned artists such as Anton Smit, Richard Scott, JD Ross, Wilma Cruise, Tony de Freitas and other up and coming artists such as Tendai Dlamani, Frans Thoka, Themba Mkhangeli. To say the least, they were overwhelmed and inspired by the support.
One of the unique things about Mdzananda and Wolwerivier Outreach Work is that they involve the community that they help. As such, children from the townships volunteer and learn (through experiences with the animals) all about animal care. Because of this, Savara decided to get the children involved in the Art Auction and they set up Art Workshops. To date, they have hosted 2 in Cape Town, 1 in Khayelitsha at Mdzananda Animal Clinic and the other at Richard Scott’s house in Melkbosstrand with the children of Khayelitsha and Wolwerivier. Together with the artists, they made art from trash and these pieces (these unique collaborations) will be up for auction alongside the others.
On the 16th of March, this Saturday, at the Atlantic Beach Country Club in Melkbosstrand, Cape Town, the next Pieces of Paws will be held. This will be an extravaganza art and experience auction, where you can hobnob with other animal and art enthusiasts. In addition, you will enjoy the talented mentalist and illusionist, Russell Fox, as well as live music, canapes, wine and Gin treats.
All you have to do is click through to Quicket and book your tickets.
Pull out that little black number and bow tie – this is going to be a fancy jol, people! And, of course, you get to give back!
For more info, simply go through to Giving is Living’s website or Facebook Page. And, to check out what stunning art will be on auction – link through here.
We look forward to seeing you there!

]]>The post Thinking of installing a Borehole? Take some expert advice appeared first on RNEWS.
]]>We have been hearing quite a few scary stories around those very conscientious Capetonians who decided to invest in a borehole installation. With the view to using the water to feed their gardens and top up their pools, and even some redirecting the borehole water with filtration systems to cater to their toilet flushing and washing needs, some of these unsuspecting souls have been victims of trickery and in the end theft.
We decided to investigate the rumours and spoke to one of the leading borehole specialists in Cape Town, Nomad Drilling. Run by a team of experts, with a collective experience of over 35 years, we asked them a few pertinent questions following our poking around into the stories around unscrupulous borehole installers.
One of the reports we received was of a family that employed the services of one such company, to install the borehole in their backyard, with the view to sustaining their garden and pool. On the Monday the crew arrived with their machinery and promptly went to work drilling into the ground. 2 days later they announced they were done, the borehole installation process complete. A day later the homeowner received a bill for an exorbitant amount, way over what had been quoted initially. On questioning it, he was told that the fine print did state that if they had to drill deeper to get to water, they would keep going. They claimed that they had to go much deeper than normal hence the extra costs. He had no recourse.
Another gentleman reported that his borehole had seemingly collapsed and his garden was a mess of muddy water, his plant and tree life destroyed. When trying to get the borehole company to come back, they ignored his calls and to date, he still hasn’t been able to rectify the very unfortunate situation.
Steve Tripney of Nomad Drilling, who arrived in South Africa from Scotland back in 1982, has been working in the construction industry since 1987. Steve had this to say, “I have seen some shocking results following the use of inferior or sub-standard machinery and materials being used and it is sad that there are those out there bringing down the good name of the borehole and water reticulation industry.”
His partner Roland Kugelmann, also a veteran in the construction industry, believes that anyone wanting to install a borehole should follow this checklist
While this is a pretty comprehensive list, the bottom line seems to be that you need to know your chosen borehole specialist backwards.
At the end of the day, they are performing a very precise procedure, literally digging up your land, with the hopes that water will be hit and that the end result is water that you can use or filtrate further. Nomad Drilling recommends that you rather go with a qualified referral from a happy homeowner. This way you can be assured of good, quality workmanship.
Keep up to date with all community-worthy news.
